Department of Animation

The animation macrocosm is rapidly changing. The visual media around us are constantly evolving and with this the expressive domain of animation has broadened dramatically. There is a need worldwide for the critical evaluation of animated expression as an art with a historical and cultural background, as well as the acknowledgement for its full and multidimensional presence. The Department of Animation is committed to nurturing artists with abundant creativity and undertaking education and research while at the same time both assessing animated expression in Japan from an international perspective and realizing its further autonomous development.

International Collaborations

We will continue to stage international co-production projects involving students from Japan, China and South Korea in conjunction with Korea National University of Arts and Communication University of China. We are committed to the education of students with an international point of view. We also operate study abroad programs on the basis of international cultural exchange agreements with such institutions as Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs (ENSAD) in France, and are actively forming alliances and networks with other overseas educational institutions including the University of Southern California in the U.S. and Gobelins, l’ecole de l’image in France.

After Graduation

Students who have completed studies in the Department of Animation are active in a wide range of fields, with some striking out on their own as independent directors, and others finding employment in film and animation production companies, or educational and research institutions, public cultural facilities or non-profit organizations.
